What's That Noise? A Guide to Car Sounds for Austin Drivers

Every driver knows the moment: your car starts making a noise it didn't make last week, and now you're driving down MoPac with the radio off, trying to figure out what it means. Some noises are harmless. Some are your car politely asking for a cheap part. And a few mean "pull over now." The trick is knowing which is which.

Squealing When You Start the Car

The good news is a belt is one of the cheaper fixes on this list. The bad news is that same belt usually drives your alternator, power steering, and often the water pump. Squealing When You Brake

Grinding When You Brake

Most likely cause: the pads are gone and it's metal on metal: the pad backing plate grinding into the rotor. Every stop is now damaging parts, turning a pad job into a pad-and-rotor job. Clicking When You Turn

Most likely cause: a worn CV joint or axle. The rhythmic click-click-click as you turn out of a parking lot (usually louder the sharper the turn) is the classic sound of a constant-velocity joint whose grease has dried out or whose boot has torn. Urgency: medium to high. It won't strand you today, but a CV joint that fails completely can, and it can cut power to the wheels while you're moving. If clicking becomes clunking or you feel vibration, stop driving it.

Knocking From the Engine

Most likely causes: this one splits two ways. A deep, rhythmic knock that speeds up with engine RPM can be rod knock (worn engine bearings), and that's the most serious noise in this guide. If you hear it, stop driving. Continuing to run a knocking engine can turn a repairable problem into a replacement engine. A lighter knock or ping under acceleration is more often carbon buildup or a fuel-octane issue, which is far less dramatic. Because the stakes are so different, this is exactly the kind of noise worth a professional engine diagnostic rather than a guess.

Ticking on Cold Start

Most likely causes: an exhaust manifold leak or noisy valve lifters. A tick that's loudest on a cold morning and fades as the engine warms is often a small crack or failed gasket in the exhaust manifold. The metal expands as it heats and temporarily seals the gap. Lifter tick, on the other hand, is oil-related: low level, old oil, or wear. Check your oil first. Urgency: low to medium, but a tick that lasts longer each morning is a tick that's growing.

Hissing After You Shut the Car Off

Most likely causes: a cooling system leak or a vacuum leak. Hissing from under the hood after shutoff (sometimes with a sweet smell or steam) is often coolant escaping onto hot engine parts. A sharper hiss while the engine runs points at a vacuum leak, which usually brings a rough idle with it. Urgency: medium to high. Humming or Droning at Highway Speed

It sounds alarming and costs very little to fix. Urgency: low. Worth securing so it doesn't fall off, but nobody's weekend needs to be ruined over a heat shield.

Roaring Under Acceleration

Most likely cause: an exhaust leak: a rusted-through pipe, a failed gasket, or a cracked flex pipe. The car suddenly sounds "sporty" when you get on the gas. Urgency: medium.
